Crazy Eights rules

Setup

Shuffle a standard 52-card deck. Deal 5 cards to each player — or 8 each in a two-player game — then flip one card face up to start the discard pile. The rest of the deck becomes the draw pile. On Discard Party, all of this happens automatically the moment the host starts the game.

Taking a turn

On your turn, play one card from your hand onto the discard pile. It must match the top card's suit or rank: on the 7 of clubs you can play any club or any 7. Simple — until your hand stops cooperating.

If you can't play (or don't want to), draw one card from the pile. If the drawn card is playable you may play it immediately; otherwise your turn ends. When the draw pile is empty and you have no playable card, you pass and the turn moves on.

Eights are wild

The eights give the game its name and its teeth. An eight can be played on any card, and when you play one, you name the suit the next player must follow. A well-timed eight can bail you out of a dead hand or steer the game straight into a suit you're stacked with. Most losses in Crazy Eights come from spending an eight too early — hold it until it hurts.

Winning

The first player to play their final card wins immediately. On Discard Party the win is called automatically, and the room can start a rematch with a single tap, so a best-of-five settles itself quickly.

Common variations and house rules

Families have piled house rules onto Crazy Eights for generations: 2s that force the next player to draw two, queens that skip, aces that reverse direction, or scoring across multiple hands where eights caught in your hand cost 50 points. Discard Party plays the classic core rules — match suit or rank, eights are wild — which keeps games quick and makes it painless to bring a first-timer to the table.
